Monster money for Leviathan
01 Aug 2008
AUCTION: New York maritime collectors gasped when a shipping poster expected to sell for just £3,000 was knocked down for £19,000 following a lengthy sale-room bidding battle, writes Dave Selby.
The 1920s poster of the Leviathon sold for £19,000
The 1920s poster of the US Lines liner SS Leviathan was bought by an anonymous collector at Christie's annual Ocean Liner-themed auction.
Experts credited the astronomical price to three factors: the bold and dramatic graphic style; growing market interest in US Lines memorabilia and the fascination for the SS Leviathan, which was billed in the poster as the 'world's largest ship.'
There was, of course, a fourth factor: two people wanted it - a lot.
