RNLI strained over fuel costs
01 Aug 2008
SOUTH COAST: The RNLI says its fundraising efforts will have to be intensified to meet the rocketing cost of fuel, writes Iain Sutherland.
The RNLI are suffering from the effects of recent fuel hikes
In the last year fuel costs have leapt from around £1.5m a year to £3m to keep the 190 inshore lifeboats and 210 all-weather vessels in the UK running.
A litre of marine diesel, which cost 45p just over a year ago, now costs 80p, meaning the price of filling up an all-weather craft has soared from £1,000 to £1,800.
