Sea Otter goes back to basics

INLAND WATERWAYS: A new limited company is being formed to continue the manufacture and servicing of Sea Otter aluminium boats, writes Harry Arnold. It will, however, revert to concentrating on the original functions of the Staveley-based boatbuilders, which was the building, maintaining and providing owner services for purely trailable boats.

The new company will be run by Paul Hobson – a nephew of the company founders Cindy and Ray Shepherd – and will employ just 12 of the original staff and occupy one of the two existing buildings.

It will continue to build versions of the original 17ft to 31ft trailable range and offer servicing and refit facilities, up to a complete factory overhauls, to owners of over 300 original Sea Otter boats.

Work will be also undertaken at owner’s moorings. The new company will work with the Sea Otter Owners Club on this and also offer a boat moving service for those who do not own their own trailers.
