ABP to transform Hamilton Dock

EAST COAST: Work is under way on a major new development that's set to transform the Port of Lowestoft's Hamilton Dock into an exclusive new marina, writes Debbie Cowan.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has invested £500,000 to create a new marina for visiting yachtsmen and develop what would be a satellite site to Lowestoft's Haven Marina (LHM).

The development at Hamilton Dock will house 46 new berths near the town centre and, if everything goes according to schedule, the marina is due to be completed by spring 2008.

In December, a number of pontoons were assembled on the docks close to the town's Bascule Bridge before being towed to the Hamilton Dock.

Having opened the £1m 140-berth Haven Marina in 2004, the idea of further development in Lowestoft was also mooted, as ABP revealed further plans to develop marina berthing in the Hamilton Dock, seaward of the bridge, if the LHM proved to be a success.

A spokesperson for ABP said: ‘Hamilton Dock's location, accessible within minutes of the open water, makes it particularly suitable for visiting yachtsmen.’
