Every little helps...

INLAND WATERWAYS: Supermarket chain Tesco has been praised in parliament for switching to water to transport its New World wine over the 32 miles from Liverpool Docks across the River Mersey and up the Manchester Ship Canal to its bottling plant in Irlam, writes Harry Arnold.

This, they say, saves 50 lorry trips a week and cuts carbon emissions by 80%. Sainsbury's has also recently conducted similar trials on the River Thames in London.

Quoting this in a commons early day motion, Charlotte Atkins, Labour MP for Staffordshire Moorlands, has urged the government to create a dedicated freight unit to encourage greater carriage of freight on the inland waterways following the recommendations of the House of Commons select committee report on British Waterways (BW).

Mike Hancock, Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South, has also tabled an early day motion that notes the environmental benefits and calls on the government and major retailers to support the movement of freight by water.
