Waterlinks project misses out on funding

SOUTH WEST: A project to open up ancient waterways in Somerset has lost vital council support and is now looking for alternative sources of funding, writes Katina Read.

The Waterlinks project involves the integrated reopening of 20 ancient waterways in aimed at making the canals the life-blood of the county at a cost of around £81m.

The scheme was made up of 21 separate projects which included the reconstruction of a 2,000 year-old lake village in Glastonbury with visitors being given the chance to punt through reed beds.

However one of the main supporters, Sedgemoor District Council, has said it can’t continue to support the project after it missed out on £50m in lottery funding. Creators of the Waterlinks project say it can still be a success but will take longer to achieve.
