Farming biofuel company flooded with marine orders

WALES: A new farm-based biodiesel plant in North Wales has sparked a flood of interest from yacht and boat owners worried about rising duel costs and the November increase in diesel prices following the loss of the UK's red diesel derogation.

BML Biofuels, based at Llanfihangel GM, near Corwen, has already received maritime inquiries as far afield as Portsmouth since its official opening last Thursday, says a story in The Daily Post.

'To be honest, it’s a market I’d never thought of,' said co-director Llyr Jones. 'We’re getting a lot of interest locally too, from places like Rhyl and Pen Llyn.'

The company says its main target market will continue to be farmers, especially given recent rises in fuel prices, and BML will continue to press oil seed rape supplied by farmers for as little as 15p-17p/litre. Once growing, harvesting and transport costs are included, the resulting biodiesel equates to about 45p-55p a litre for the first 2,500 litres. After that, additional taxes are payable.

'When we first started, I never dreamt we would be competitive with red diesel,' said Mr Jones, 'but that’s now costing 68pm a litre.'

BML is the first plant in Wales - and only the second in Britain - to extract oil by cold pressing oilseed rape (OSR). It will produce 1.3m litres of bio-diesel every year (3,600 litres-a-day) as well as 2,500 tonnes of high protein feed pellets for livestock.
