World journos tour UK leisure marine firms

INWARD MISSION: Supported by Marine South West, the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWERDA), Dorset County Council and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and sponsored by Ocean Safety and Henri Lloyd, 20 journalists from 13 countries last month went on five-day tour of UK leisure marine companies.

Organised by the British Marine Federation (BMF), the Inward Mission began at Cowes Yacht Haven and continued on to Portland Harbour. The journalists were able to test boats and equipment and were invited to a number of product showcases. Over 50 UK companies participated in the event to demonstrate their products to the group.

The journalists came from a wide range of countries from emerging markets such as China, Russia and Brazil, to established marine bases such as France, Spain, Croatia and Turkey. The BMF expects a record amount of press coverage in key overseas trade publications following the event.

‘Our aim was to increase awareness of the UK marine industry's capabilities and technological innovation, as well as build relationships with an international press audience, which we are confident we have successfully achieved,’ said BMF international executive Amanda Simpson.

‘We have seen a vast array of different boats and products which will be well appreciated in the Russian market,’ said Artur Grokhovski, from Russia’s Power and Sail Boats.

‘China is a young market and although we still have much to learn, working with the BMF and other UK companies will fast track our progress considerably,’ said Janet Chen, of China Boating.
