Opal Marine bails out of sailing boats

DEALERSHIPS: When its distribution agreement with Legend Yachts ends on 31 May, Opal Marine will become a purely powerboat company relying on its Azimut, Rodman and Mainship brands. The move to cease the agreement was described as a 'mutual agreement'.

Opal said Legend Yachts was no longer a good fit with the other brands and that the company wanted to 'refocus its business on the key powerboat brands'.

A statement from the company said: 'Opal Marine and Legend Yachts respectively look forward to their planned growth in the UK market and will both be on full display at the forthcoming Southampton Boat Show.'

When Boating Business asked for confirmation of the widespread rumours that Opal was about to close some of its dealerships and lay off staff, we were told MD Mark Cavendish was 'unavailable for comment'.
