Ship Shape beds (an end to the crumplies)
01 Mar 2008
Getting bedding to fit beds on boats has been a major headache. In the past this has been solved by commissioning bespoke bedding, custom made to each bed on board at outrageous prices. The majority of boat owners, however, suffer in silence with messy cabins, hard to make beds and overheating feet.
Ship Shape Bedding was formed to address this problem and make affordable bedding solutions for boats of all types. They have opened up a whole new marketing opportunity by introducing an extensive range of standard bedding items including fitted sheets, duvets, mattress protectors and DRY-Mat, a product designed to stop condensation forming under mattresses.
These can now be stocked by chandlers or offered with a boat sale, but the commissioning package represents a completely new revenue and profit stream.
Paul Hallatt of Ship Shape, explains: 'Most beds are 6'6" long, with doubles ranging from 6' to 7' across at the top, while the bottom often varies - the bed can be tapered on one side as in quarter cabins, or on both, as in the forepeak. These shapes make up the core of the range but are complemented by bedding for round-ended beds, tapered berths, rectangular beds, pipe-cots and others.'
Ship Shape's standard range is reckoned to be suitable for 95% of all boat beds, and, as the range is produced in the UK in bulk production batches, they are of good quality, and prices are similar to domestic items found on the high street.
'In the past, bedding like this has only been available on top-of-the range boats and was regarded as a luxury item,' says Hallett. 'Our pricing means that Ship Shape bedding is now well within the reach of people with more modest boats and budgets, bringing Ship Shape cabins and comfort to everyone.'
Because all the bedding items are available from stock, this is now a range that retailers and outfitters can offer, resulting in increased profits and turnover, and happy customers.
