Change means progression for Rhu Marina
01 May 2008
The acquisition of the 175-berth marina with related facilities on a 2.6 ha (6.5 acre) site on the Firth of Clyde represents a major boost to the growing marine leisure market, which is itself making a significant contribution to Scottish tourism.
A master plan for the site which will include an expanded marina and related business as well as high quality apartments is now being drawn up for The Crown Estate by well known Scottish architects, RMJM.
The new plans, which will see the number of berths almost doubled, an increase in car parking and a new restaurant, will be a big boost for the local community. Quay Marinas will operate the marina on a lease from the Crown.
Outgoing managing director Alan Dundas, who is also a board member of the Helensburgh Partnership and the Helensburgh Chamber of Commerce (both of which are promoting the regeneration of the area), explains that the marina, built in the seventies, had design problems with the early breakwaters and so it has taken longer than envisaged to complete development plans.
He went on to say: "The involvement of the Crown should now hopefully see that vision completed in the not too distant future, and we wish them every success."
