Maritime art on the crest of a wave

AUCTION: Despite jitters in global financial markets maritime art is riding high in the international fine-art sale rooms, with a sensational record price for the work of highly regarded marine artist Charles Napier Hemy, writes Dave Selby.
Hemy's picture, "The Crab Pots" reached a record auction price
At Bonhams' most recent sale of marine paintings in London a major Hemy, "The Crab Pots", painted in 1904, made four times what the experts predicted, selling for £120,000 to smash the auction record for the artist.
In his life time (1841-1917) Hemy was highly regarded and acknowledged as the most accomplished marine painter of his generation, but more recently interest his work has been eclipsed in the market place by more populist 20th century artists such as Montague Dawson.
Many experts now say Hemy's work is poised for a major resurgence in the market place.
