Kershaw reassures on keels

KEEL FAILURES: Since a recent press release from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), highlighting keel failure concerns, talked about a "spate of recent keel and hull failures" and asking for yacht designers, boatbuilders and owners to check their yacht structures, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA)felt it may be useful to add its own comment regarding these changes.
Ken Kershaw:
Ken Kershaw: "vital that safety issues were addressed"

The RYA’s technical manager and ISAF working party chairman Ken Kershaw explained: "The driver behind ISAF setting up a working party to look at keel and keel attachment structures was a submission from the RYA in November 2007 brought as a result of the Hooligan V accident back in February last year.

"It was vital that safety issues were addressed as the Hooligan V incident and other incidents previously involved loss of life. By tightening up the regulations and bringing in a single standard the boating public, or at least the yacht racing part of it, can expect designs and builds to be to a common, up-to-date, international standard developed by the very best experts in the field.

"The new regulation is unlikely to affect any existing boat or those that are still on the drawing board unless the owner wishes."
