    FINANCIALS: The Bénéteau Group's share price hit a 52-week low on Tuesday 30 September after the group issued a warning on 2009 orders. The group's 2007-2008 financials reported a strong performance for 2008 but warned of a drop in orders in 2009. 

  • Military orders save Avon workers

    LAYOFFS OFF: The lay-offs announced by Avon Inflatables in April this year have been postponed after the board of Zodiac Marine & Pool reviewed the Boats Business Unit reorganisation plan. The immediate effect of this review is that over 50 jobs previously destined to be made redundant by April 2010 will now be saved.

    LIQUIDATION: Directors Greg O'Brien and Jim Hunt of Purple Sails & Marine Ltd have been forced to place the company into creditors' voluntary liquidation. The liquidator, Chris Moore of KJ Watkin & Co, is seeking a purchaser for the assets of the business and will also be contacting all known creditors. 

  • Sunsail to close Scottish operation

    SCOTLAND: Sunsail, which has had a base at Largs Yacht Haven since the early nineties, is to close its Scottish operation on 31st October, writes Mike Balmforth. The fleet of 15 Jeanneau Sun Fast 37s will be put on the market and local manager Ian Macdonald will be made redundant. Three seasonal jobs will also be lost. 

  • ABC acquires Blackwater Meadow and Canaltime fleet

    INLAND WATERWAYS: The ABC Leisure Group has acquired the Blackwater Meadow Marina at Ellesmere on the busy Llangollen Canal - the most popular holiday cruising waterway in Britain - writes Harry Arnold. 

  • Fairline cuts jobs, but looks to recovery

    JOB LOSSES: In spite of selling 30 boats at the PSP SBS and taking orders worth £30m for the new Squadron 55, the 2008 Queen's Award for Enterprise winner Fairline Boats has slashed 90 jobs 'to match match production levels to softer global demand for our products'.

  • Big contracts announced at SBS

    CONTRACT No 1: The Yacht Leg and Cradle Company announced it had won the contract to supply a range of yacht cradles and motorboat stands for the new Dean & Reddyhoff marina at Portland in Dorset. The site will form part of the venue hosting the sailing events for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has been developed to provide boating facilities for up to 600 resident yachts and powerboats. 

  • PSP SBS ends 'just 5% down'

    PSP SBS: The PSP Southampton Boat show closed on Sunday having attracted 121,389 visitors, just 5% down on last year's 127,345. This total, given the prevailing economic situation as we went into the show with the crash of Lehman ringing in our ears, can be regarded as a result. 

  • Buckie Shipyard wins excellence award

    AWARD: Buckie Shipyard has been presented with The Crown Estate Award for Excellence in a Marine Business. The yard has been a key player in the Scottish marine industry for decades, working with sophisticated high value vessels and has been a major contractor to The Royal National Lifeboat Institution for over 60 years.

    INVESTMENT: The Yacht Haven Group has completed a 1m investment into Plymouth's waterfront that has created 25 new local jobs and will, it says, enhance the waterfront and satisfy the city's growing appetite for fresh culinary experiences.

    RED DIESEL: As predicted in BB’s NewsUpdate last Monday, the British Marine Federation (BMF), the RYA and the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) have agreed details with Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on implementing the increased duty on red diesel resulting from the loss of the UK’s derogation.

    OBITUARY: Sadly, the news of the death of Olin J Stephens at the age of 100 came through yesterday afternoon, Sunday September 14.

    PSP SBS: Britain’s Olympic sailors will open the PSP Southampton Boat Show in association with ITV Meridian on Friday. Skandia Team GBR gold medal winners Ben Ainslie, Paul Goodison, Iain Percy, Andrew Simpson, Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson will arrive at the show with their fellow Olympic team members and Mike Golding on his Open 60 Ecover 3 at 10.00. 

  • Red Diesel: no HMRC decision yet

    RED DIESEL: As the 1 November deadline for the new price of red diesel approaches, the newspaper stories are becoming more scary, with Southampton’s Southern Daily Echo’s headline asking ‘Is it the end for pleasure boating?’ 

  • Top speakers and top subjects at BMEA Conference

    CONFERENCE: The 2008 British Marine Electronics Association (BMEA) Conference will take place on 8 October at the Novotel Hotel, Southampton. Among the speakers will be James Findlay of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), Nick Heyes of Marine Electronic Services and Martin Hurll of St James Place Capital. 

  • Rod Carr ‘not leaving RYA’

    LIVELY RUMOURS: RYA chief executive Rod Carr OBE was mentioned in two stories in The Independent on Sunday on 7 September. The first story linked Mr Carr with the chairmanship of the British Olympic Association (BOA), replacing Lord Colin Moynihan.

    CLIENT MONIES: The Association of Brokers & Yacht Agents (ABYA) is advising boat buyers to safeguard their money by only using reputable brokers that operate client accounts. 

  • Grating goes Composites

    NAME CHANGE: Fibreglass Grating has changed it name to Dura Composites with immediate effect. The new identity and logo is, says the company, a strategic move designed to reflect the company's successes in providing a wide range of composite solutions to industry since 1995.  

  • Quayside not on its uppers, says Dury

    ADMINISTRATION: Deck (Leisure) Ltd, the company that held the licence for the Quayside footwear and clothing range, went into administration on 4 August. A new company, Quayside (UK) LLP, was set up by Martyn Dury, his wife Elizabeth and son Peter Dury on 24 July 2008 and is trading from Martyn Dury's home in North Somerset.
