BW to monitor Devils Den use

INLAND WATERWAYS: British Waterways (BW) has issued a statement on the installation of the door on the Devil's Den cave and the associated work completed for the Grantscape project.

After what is described as ‘a constructive meeting’ was held with the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Society on Wednesday 14 August, BW apologised for the lack of consultation with the canal society over the installation of the door.

BW says the door on the cave emerged from a proposal to address some environmental benefits and to help overcome the antisocial activities going on in the cave. On inspection, BW discovered fires had been lit in the cave, graffiti had been scratched into the walls and there was evidence of alcohol and drug taking. BW provided photographic evidence of these issues to the Canal Society.

At the meeting BW explained that, by providing a variety of safe roosts for the conservation of bats through the Grantscape project, it was fulfilling its legal duty towards the protected species and therefore potentially reducing any future conflicts of interest. BW says by installing the door on the cave it could help improve the habitat for bats and also deter the cave’s unlawful use.

Following the discussion an agreement was reached that the door would remain in place on the cave for a 12 month temporary period. During this time, BW would monitor what use the cave had by bats and other species and then an expert evaluation would be obtained in April 2009 and will be shared with the Canal Society.

If that evaluation provides evidence to show bats are using the cave, BW will then discuss the future of the door and an extension of the period of its installation.

If, however, there is sufficient evidence to prove conclusively no bats are present or using the cave, BW will arrange for the door's removal. It says this will leave no evidence of the door's existence as it was installed by means of battens located in recesses in the cave wall.

BW says interim reports are planned for 11 October 2008 and 31 January 2009, which will also be shared with the Canal Society. An offer was also extended to the society to attend walks organised by the Grantscape project, together with the invitation of a special visit for the society to enable members to find out more about the project and its environmental benefits to the local area.
