CORRECTION - Lifeboat controversy at Hope Cove is not an RNLI vessel

The RNLI has asked that we make a point clear on the story we ran in our Monday night NewsUpdate.

The controversy involving the Hope Cove coastguard boat, which was subsequently seized by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, does not involve the RNLI because the boat is not part of the charity’s fleet of lifeboats.

Although the RNLI Salcombe lifeboat and RNLI lifeguards at Bantham beach responded to the Hope Cove incident at the request of search and rescue coordinators, HM Coastguard, both units were stood down as those in difficulties were understood to have been rescued by members of the public.

The RNLI is an independent charity that funds its own fleet of lifeboats through public donations, while HM Coastguard is part of the Government-funded Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

We apologise for any confusion brought about by our sloppy editing.
