The Keel-Checker

09 Aug 2011

The ICOMIA Superyacht Refit Group has launched its first website to inform captains, owners, yacht managers and their representatives about the high quality work performed at the member yards.

“This initiative by ICOMIA and Southampton Solent University has been shown to be of significant value to the industry and we shall be completing other similar projects within the near future,” said Tony Rice, ICOMIA secretary general.

Keel-Checker was launched in early March of this year. It is an online tool for assessing whether keel designs are within the parameters of the new standard ISO 12215 Part 9, which has gone into Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) voting. Although the new standard has still a couple of months to go until publication, many organisations already require compliant keel designs.

The online tool was developed by Dr Robin Loscombe, a member of the ISO working group and a senior lecturer at Southampton Solent University.

“Keel-Checker is freely available so that engineers can see what part 9 involves now. I'm delighted that ICOMIA has decided to mount this on their website”, said Dr Loscombe at the time of the launch.

The software can be downloaded free of charge from the ICOMIA website. In the Keel-Checker starting package, you get an evaluation copy of the software, a self-explanatory manual and a reporting tool for the technical file. The full version of the software is also available for free should you require it.
