Portsmouth Poll - August 2011

09 Aug 2011

The most expensive superyacht, America’s Cup, Britney Spears, TEPs at Cowes Week...

Poll-600

Poll hears a Liverpudlian designer by the name of Stuart Hughes has got into the record books by having designed the most expensive superyacht at a cool £3billion.

History SPoll01GoldWupreme is a 30.5m boat with a hull (apparently) covered in gold foil. Oh, and there there’s another 100,000kgs of gold and platinum used on board – presumably for taps and things, Poll wonders?

Oh – and another thing: she has a wall feature made of stone from a meteor - and bone from a Tyrannosaurus Rex. As you do, says Poll…

Mr Hughes says History Supreme is likely to spend her life in a dry dock. Her unnamed Malaysian businessman owner wants her just for show.

The last America’s Cup nearly ended with the two protagonists, the Ice Cream Salesman Ernesto Bertaralli and the software salesman Larry Ellison, being sued for bringing sailing into disrepute.

And the current AC build up is beginning to look remarkable similar in escapades. After the Golden Gate Yacht Club reckoned on us having up to 15 teams to watch thrash out the various acts on the way to the 34th AC, it seems we may be down to as few as – well, maybe three turning up in San Francisco. And one of those is the defender.Poll02catW

Venezia Challenge has defaulted on its obligations, which means the team has been “released from further obligations for the 34th Cup”. And commentators say Team China isn’t looking too good right now, with Team Korea and Aleph struggling…

But there are, apparently, nine challengers in Cascais for the first of the America’s Cup World Series regattas over nine days 6-14 August before the caravanserai arrives in Plymouth in September.

Poll awaits with interest…

Poll hears one of Britney Spears’ bodyguards is suing her for $10million in damages after he found her attitude to life hard to take.

He accuses her of exposing herself to him and attempting to lure him into bed with her.

Poll wonders what this man’s on? She reckons the majority of the male population of the world would be willing to trade places with him if she would continue behaving in that manner…

Then again, the bodyguard’s suit goes on to say “she did not bathe for days on end, did not use deodorant, did not brush her teeth…”

And it adds she insisted on farting…

Before the world’s male population changes its mind about the young lady, Poll can reveal: “Spears has fired back against the allegations, reportedly insisting, ‘He's a liar’."

Keep those fantasies alive, Poll tells her male readers…

Poll hears Ramora UK is providing a free distress flare disposal service to sailors taking part in Cowes Week this August, says Poll. This will give sailors with TEPs a quick (and free) way of getting rid of them.

Maybe not so much fun as in days gone by when the Friday fireworks party saw some unofficial displays around the harbour. But certainly a lot safer…
