Person-June

First job…
Working ridiculously long hours in the local newsagents when I was at Art School. I didn’t get a grant and my parents didn’t help me financially so I paid my own way. I would have welcomed the Student Loan system.

How I got into this industry…
I was five when my dad first took me with him to the Cambridge University Press and taught me how to bind a book. He paid me in Chelsea buns from Fitzbillies. With young children I ran my own business from home for 10 years, then when the youngest started school I took a part time job selling classified ads on the very first issue of Jet Skier magazine. That was 22 years ago.

The best advice I've ever received…
Any decision is better than none. Make a choice and then wait for the reaction in your stomach – you will soon know if it’s the right one.

You should really visit…
Petra in Jordan. This extraordinary city was carved into pink rock by the Nabataeans. It was an important junction for the silk and spice trade routes that linked China and India with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome, but then it was lost for centuries. Don’t die without going.

One thing that’s dear to my heart is…
Fast cars. My father let me drive his AC Cobra when I was 18 and I was hooked. I have owned a TR6, an AMG Mercedes, one of the very first Calibras off the production line and an M5.

I’m a secret follower of…
Folk music. Wellies in a muddy field watching fiddly diddly music at festivals is my bag.

My most over used saying or phrase…
I don’t want it perfect, I want it now. (Designers can tweak forever.)

Favourite activity away from work…
Every year we rent a house in the country, miles from anywhere. We take the kids, their wives and girlfriends, the grandkids, grandpups, guitars, games, good food and wine. Absolute heaven.

How I cope with stress…
I don’t. However, I have a glassworks studio. I make jewellery, bowls and sculptures. Working with large pieces of glass and high temperatures means I have to give it 100% of my concentration.

My advice to Portsmouth Poll is…
Try to keep up with my gossip Poll!
