Dorset marinas taking Olympic bookings
Poole Quay Boat Haven (top) and the Port of Poole Marina are gearing up for the 2012 Games
With the Olympic sailing events being staged at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy – and expected to bring 64,000 extra visitors to Dorset - local marinas are ready to provide berths for the seafarers.
“With the sailing events happening in Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour and strict security limiting where vessels can travel, Poole is the ideal place for spectators to base themselves,” said John Binder, manager of the two marinas. “It’s far enough out to avoid the media circus and close enough to be able to travel daily to the Games.”
Mr Binder said the new permanent berth marina opened in July and is already booked up, though they’ve just released larger berths there for 60m superyachts. “And we’re already taking bookings for temporary berths for 2012 at our sister marina Poole Quay Boat Haven,” he added.
The new marina, which was designed in preparation for the Olympics and constructed by Walcon, cost £1m and creates space for 59 boats, 10 ribs and 10 jet skis. It occupies the old Ro-Ro1 Brittany Ferries berth and a free RIB taxi service operates to nearby Poole Quay.
The sailing events take place from Sunday 29 July until Saturday 11 August.
