Full-time contract for the 2018 season, beginning early 2018
The Cirdan Sailing Trust
c. £1,200/month + onboard food & accommodation
UK East Coast and South Coast, for coastal & cross-Channel voyages
The Cirdan Sailing Trust works hard to support is staff and promote them where appropriate. Because of this, two new Bosun positions have opened up within the trust. Cirdan are looking for a Bosun to work onboard Faramir, as well as their 1937 gaff ketch Queen Galadriel, for the 2018 season.
Starting at the beginning of February 2018 through until early November 2018.
Faramir starts & finishes her season in Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex, on the East Coast of the UK. In the summer she works from harbours along the North East coast, and recent seasons have also seen her up in Scotland.
Charters are predominantly week-long residential with groups of up to 16 young people onboard. You’ll plan your week’s voyage dependant on weather, tides and the abilities of your group that week. There is always variation – you never know which amazing young people you’re going to meet next, or where you’re going to go.
The Bosun’s job is seen as a training and development position for the right candidates. There is potential to progress through to Mate and Skipper roles across Cirdan’s fleet of vessels.
The minimum requirements for this role are:
- RYA Day Skipper or equivalent sailing experience
- ENG1/ML5 medical certificate
- Experience sailing large vessels
- Experience working or volunteering with youth organisations e.g Scouts, DofE etc.
- RYA Power Boat Level 2 is desirable
Crew aboard all the Trust’s vessels must have empathy and ideally experience of working with youth of today as they have to interact with the trainees to instruct, encourage and motivate and provide an experience that builds confidence and teaches life skills.
Successful candidates will hold or be subject to a Disclosure & Barring Service check.
Contracts are seasonal starting in February through until November.
These are positions with scheduled leave periods.
Salary & Benefits
- Salary circa £1,200 per month.
Additional benefits include:
- Onboard accommodation
- Onboard food
- Food allowances for maintenance periods
- Crew uniform & laundry
- Leave travel allowance
The Cirdan Trust also have two other vessels in their fleet – the infamous 1912 gaff yawl Duet, and their 1937 gaff ketch Queen Galadriel. There is the opportunity to sail within the rest of Cirdan’s fleet, gaining wide experience.
There is also the potential to be supported through applications for funding to support your own professional sailing career development.
Interviews will take place at Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex, date to be confirmed.
