New hydrophobic down jacket and gilet from Gill
Gill has introduced a ‘pioneering’ hydrophobic down jacket and gilet available in both men’s and women’s styles.
The company says it has taken the best elements of natural down to create a warm, lightweight and versatile layer that will withstand ‘almost anything the harshest environments can muster’.
“Natural down jackets and gilets are lightweight, stylish and practical, providing a superb layer of insulation,” explained marketing assistant Siobhan Hardy.
“However, if untreated down gets wet, it loses most of its insulation properties which, is where hydrophobic down comes in.
“A relatively new concept, the purpose is to solve the main drawback of 'regular' down by treating it with a water repellent finish that means it not only resists water for longer but makes for quicker drying should it ever get soaked.”
To further enhance wet weather performance, the outer fabric has also been treated to repel water.
The products can be worn over base layers and under protective outer layers.
“This hydrophobic jacket is far more water resistant than those using untreated down, however it is water-repellent, not waterproof,” added Ms Hardy. “If users are going to be out in wet conditions for a prolonged amount of time, they need to make sure they have a protective waterproof jacket.”
The men’s version is available in charcoal with a red lining; the women’s is in pewter, with a tonal lining.
