A new product that helps yacht owners and sailing teams manage their sail inventory will have a digital reach with the development of an app.

Smart Sail has been designed to provide real time analytics on the performance and condition of the sail including the number of hours a sail has been ‘in use’ and can detect ‘flogging’ in an unrestrained or poorly trimmed sail. RNF will build the Bluetooth-enabled app for Smart Sail, which will use a combination of the app and a specially designed small beacon which logs a unique ID for each individual sail to which it is attached.

Rob Mannion, RNF MD, said: “This is a fantastic project to be involved in and further expands RNF’s credentials with Bluetooth technology from retail to asset management and live telemetrics.”

Smart measurements

A built-in inclinometer allows Smart Sail to measure how far the sail is leaning off the vertical and uses an ultra violet sensor that measures the amount of UV radiation a sail has been exposed to.

Racing teams can use live performance data to make real time decisions about whether to change sails on-course. Teams can also use the data to evaluate post-race sail analytics.

Those responsible for the asset management of sails can use the app to improve budget planning by being able to plan for sail repair and replacement as well as enhance inventory efficiency as unique identification codes ensure that owners know which sails are where at any given time.

The project, which has been backed by Innovate UK, was the idea of Rachael Tapp, co-founder of Smart Sail.
