Gurit to transfer UK prepreg business to Spain
Gurit is to transfer its UK prepreg business to its Spanish production facility by summer 2018 because of under-utilisation.
The move will result in a staffing reduction of around 70 full time employees in the UK and cost the company restructuring costs of CHF 3.1 million in 2017 and CHF 0.8 million in 2018.
Gurit says the technology change from the use of pre-impregnated fibres (prepregs) to infusion technology for the production of wind blades over the past ten years, resulted in non-utilisation in China and Canada and underutilisation of its prepreg production capacity in Europe.
As a result, the prepreg plants in China and Canada were closed in earlier years. The company said that it makes clear business sense to consolidate all prepreg work in one well utilised facility.
The manufacturing of formulated products and the UK-based automotive components technology centre will remain unaffected from the changes.
Gurit said it will continue to maintain the technology activity for its prepreg and formulated business in the UK and continue to invest in the tech centre in order to retain the company`s technical support capability in relation to its customers.
