Battery development alliance formed
A new programme of research, development and industrialisation for future generations of batteries will focus on high-density Li-ion and solid-state technology.
Saft is building an alliance with other European partners including Solvay, Manz and Siemens to launch the programme, which will address all market segments, such as electro-mobility (EV, e-bus, railway, marine, aviation), energy storage and specialty industries.
“This program is focusing on the battery technology of the future, and when development of such solid-state technology is successfully achieved, innovative industrialisation processes with scalable 1GWh manufacturing blocks will start," said Ghislain Lescuyer, Saft CEO.
“Batteries are at the heart of the current technological revolution. Their development and production play a strategic role in the ongoing transition to clean mobility and clean energy systems.”
The batteries are expected to provide performance, cost and safety advantages, compared to current Li-ion products.
If the development is successful, Saft will work with industrial partners on new manufacturing processes, and on cell and system industrialisation over the next seven years. This is anticipated to lead to an easily scalable manufacturing standard block of 1GWh.
Throughout the project phases, the alliance will partner with others including European academia, research centres, SMEs and customers to leverage expertise.
