Lewmar has introduced its Generation 2 thruster control systems, developed with easy installation and improved user intuition in mind.

Unlike conventional motor mounted units, the system features a remote mounted ‘Blue Box’ that houses the main electronic component of the installation.

Lewmar’s Blue Box thruster technology not only handles the port and starboard thrust commands from the helm controller, but also monitors, protects and handles the safety features of the thruster itself.

Lewmar has redesigned its range of pad and joystick thruster controllers to be both ergonomic and tactile, fitting in the same aperture as their predecessors.

“The new dual thruster controller has a multi-axis function pad giving a very simple but powerful manoeuvring control to both bow and stern thrusters,” explained Alex Thorsby, Lewmar sales distribution manager.

“In addition, the controllers incorporate a colour LED visual monitoring feature providing easy indication of the direction of thrust and fault feedback from the controller such as low voltage and motor overheat.”

An adapter module is available for new controllers to be retrofitted to Lewmar’s Generation 1 thruster installations allowing old worn panels to be upgraded.

Engineering experience

Lewmar has used its engineering experience to further develop its retractable thruster technology.

A low pivot mechanism has been designed to minimise the internal space taken up by the thruster while still ensuring the thruster tunnel is fully immersed for efficient thrust. The new RT series also comes with Blue Box control technology that monitors and controls the thruster including the deployment and auto retract functions that make the system safe and easy to operate.
