Brexit: Andy Sims, AJS Technical Services

Andrew Sims, AJS Technical Services (UK) MD, started his working life as an engineering apprentice at 15.

Five years ago, after spending more than 20 years working in the marine industry, he set up his own firm. With a strong understanding of engineering and manufacturing, it’s understandable that he has strong opinions on the UK’s move to leave the European Union.

Quite simply, he thinks that ‘leaving the EU should now be seen as a positive driver to the UK to get out and engage with the world’. He explains that his working life has been spent in engineering and that ‘we [the UK] have lost the ability to look further than our toes, now we will have to put positive efforts into exploiting 'overseas' markets which we will be very good at doing’. In other words, he thinks it’s an exciting time to be in business.

But has Brexit affected his business? The honest answer is yes – and for the good. “Business is on the increase,” he says. “We have a cost competitiveness against our close rivals. We are expanding our business 25% this year and we expect same the following year.”

As for the customers of AJS, who are all involved in engineering and manufacturing, they’re feeling quite positive. The only major issue they have is in getting the staff to cope.

And he’s just as confident when it comes to the marine sector and its future. “I would say there is a positive and progressive view of the future. More businesses will need to work together to cross promote UK interests which means that we will have to adopt a more continental attitude to co-operation while, at the same time, moving away from the EU focus.”
