Chemring Marine helps map UK marine industry
MAPPING: Chemring Marine is helping to map the UK marine industry after MD Justine Heeley, took part in the UK Marine Industries Landscape Roadmap & Capability study along with around 50 other key industry figures.
The aim of the study was to assist the Technology Strategy Board, Department for Business Innovation and Skills, Marine Industries Leadership Council and the Transport Knowledge Transfer Networking to draw up a roadmap to identify future priorities, capability and needs of the UK marine industries.
“The idea is to bring the marine industry into the forefront of the government’s mind to maximise funding and support,” said Ms Heeley. “The sector is of vital importance to the UK because of the boost it brings to the economy and the number of people it employs.”
The marine industry is also in need of well trained young workers, including more people from the UK, to fill skills gaps and bring fresh approaches, she added.
Participants at the London-based workshop identified more than 50 opportunities for the short, medium and long-term where the UK marine industry could meet elements of global market need. There was a strong emphasis on environmentally-friendly opportunities and the influence of enabling technologies.
The next phase for the group is a series of in depth workshops through the autumn on set themes.
