Back to the future
I sat at a dinner not so long back and looking around noticed that for once there were more people I did not know than I knew.
My overriding feeling was one of happiness, why because maybe just maybe the old guard have finally started to move on, giving the young new things a chance to develop into the personalities’ of the future!
Thinking about the industry, too many of the old guard have stayed in positions of influence too long, thus stifling new talent and new ideas from growing. This holds everything back.
It has been time for the industry to encourage and develop new younger driven talent for such a long time, people who want to drive and not expect to be driven.
Thing is that’s how the industry developed, with people who had the drive passion and desire to get on and do it, not sit around giving 20 reasons why something new can’t be done!
On the other hand we still need to understand why the industry fails to engage and promote women. They would certainly take the edges off what at times can be a quite crude environment. Plus increasing the professional focus within the organisations.
We now need to foster the new, bring on the unknown, stop just looking backwards and look to the future. In the end the past is after all so yesterday.
So yes I smiled at not knowing many people at that dinner and look forward to finding the same again. Let’s really mix it up.
In truth, the industry should be smiling too especially if this next ‘intake’ into the leisure marine industry can emulate that drive from the past, the entrepreneurial spirit, then we should all be cheering from the rafters.
