Disconnection, it occurs when you stop getting involved. This is dangerous and we have to be careful this does not start to proliferate in our marine world.

I raise this as this last year it’s been discussed by exhibitors a lot during events with some concern.

I have also noticed, that while previously at exhibitions and networking events a good mixture of purchasing, design and management teams attended, this seems to have been pared right back.

In my mind one of the major strength’s of what we have in our industry, is born out of the links contact and information exchange. This being created in the shop floor level of getting out and meeting colleagues.

Shaking hands, looking people in the eye, getting issues out and dealing with them surely is always the way the industry has worked and worked very well over many years.

Yes times have been hard but that’s when you need to invest in the inter industry relationships evermore so, it’s always amazing what can be achieved for the business when you have experts you can call on to help.

The real problem this disconnection causes is that slowly but surely it creates a lack of understanding for the opportunities and challenges within the sector, advanced warning or changes either positive or negative.

Without the involvement in networking and that investment, soon everything just becomes a spread sheet. I would content that would be an error.

How do you find out what is new, how do you create and maintain relationships, if you don’t invest time to understand the opportunities happening? Not everything comes to you or your door.

So my advice at this start of this year is to find the time, invest it in getting out - as the reward for doing so will far outweigh the time taken.
