For over 18 months now European Boating Industry has been involved in Boat DIGEST, the EU-funded initiative on boat dismantling.
The initiative aims to tackle the problem of abandoned boats and promote responsible disposing of the end-of-life craft among professionals and boaters.
The outcomes of the project, gathering nine partners from Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, UK and Turkey, were presented at the progress meeting last month in Naples.
With six months left until the end of Boat DIGEST in September, a lot of objectives have been met, like coming up with recommendations for owners or delivering a report on innovative products and recycling methods, tools, biodegradables materials.
After identifying key issues relevant to recreational craft owners and analysing training needs for dismantlers in the past months, the project partners will shortly propose tutoring and awareness contents for these two target groups.
Guidelines for marinas, associations, schools, repair and refit companies will also be published.
The core action now is the work on developing an e-learning and e-assessment platform that will be used as the online tool, eg, to get training on dismantling.
The pilot of the online programme for owners is expected to run from May-June 2015, while the one for dismantlers from June-July 2015. Both will be available in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish.
The pilot will be free and anybody interested in participating can join. You can follow the latest news on boatdigest.eu
The closing meeting of Boat DIGEST and the final conference presenting its results will be held in Brussels in September 2015.
