Sustainability in the Marine Industry

At the occasion of this year’s METS (Marine Trade Equipment Show) in Amsterdam, European Boating Industry has been invited to speak at a debate ‘Sustainability in the Marine Industry’ organised on 14 November 2016 by Quaynote Communications and YachtMedia. It is the second edition of the event with an expanded environmental theme, last year it was hosted under the title ‘Future of Yacht Recycling Conference’.

This year, our Secretary General was asked to discuss the situation in the recreational craft sector a year-on after the end of our project Boat DIGEST on boat dismantling (this finished in September 2015). Sandrine Devos, together with other panellists and the audience will reflect on what has been achieved and what still needs to be done with regard to possible legislation, national authorities’ engagement and the challenge of composite recycling in general.

The programme is built around themes, such as circular economy and how the boating industry can effectively embrace it and how it can interact with the environmental desirability of ocean and waterway conservation. A part of the debate is also dedicated to the concept of ocean conservation, and how to encourage our industry and its customers to be actively involved in responsibly sustaining the environment.

The time of the conference, coincides with more actions being undertaken by the European Union with regards to boats’ end-of-life, including a study on nautical tourism requested by the European Commission, where the subject of recreational craft recycling had been identified as one of the issues to look into at Brussels level.
