David Barrow - Person Behind the Face
How I got into this industry… When I was 18, I was employed by the John Lewis Partnership and work was getting in the way of sailing. I applied for a job with Newton Crum Insurance. David, the owner, had through sheer hard work, developed a thriving business and he trained me as a claims investigator. He paid me little, brought me a good car though and worked me hard.
Best advice I've ever received... A phrase from Richard Matthews, founder of Oyster, at a boat show many years ago, who said: ‘I don’t have problems only opportunities’.
You should really read.... ‘Jock of the Bushveld’ is a great read, but I keep pulling out ‘When Dinghies Delight’ and ‘Marks to Starboard’, written by Robin Steavenson, great stories about top level dinghy sailing in the post war years. He raced against the likes of John Oakley, Bruce Banks, Jack Holt and many others, who formed our industry in the 1940s and 50s.
One thing the industry needs less of is...Politics.
Most hated buzzword or workplace expression… Don’t really have one, but the word ‘awesome’ is much misused.
Best place I’ve been ...In terms of an experience I would say a night race during the One Ton Cup racing up from Rio de Janeiro to Cabo Frio. We short tacked all night, in 30°C temperature, up the coast line, tacking between the surf line on shore and a wind-blown current about a third of a mile offshore. Four boats locked together all night, racing hard.
Don't worry about...An Irishman once said 90% of the things we worry about never happen and the 10% that do happen you cannot do anything about so why worry. Not sure I completely subscribe to that, but can see his point.
Favourite meal…Any meal with amusing people, friends and family.
How I cope with stress…Generally I find that most issues, if slept on, look better in the morning.
Something about you that people might be surprised by…That we are taking leisure marine technology to the commercial shipping market with WindShip Technology providing a wind power solution for shipping that has a potential to provide a minimum 30% reduction in large commercial ships’ emissions.
