The Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company continues its investment and development after buying a 103-seater, 35-tonne ferry.

SOUTH WEST: South Devon pleasure boat operation, the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company, has expanded into the Salcombe and Kingsbridge Estuary, writes Katina Read.

The company which carries more than 250,000 passengers a year on the River Dart has bought the 50-year-old Rivermaid ferry service.

General manager Andrew Pooley refused to reveal how much the 103-seater, 35 tonne ferry cost, but admitted it was ‘hundreds of thousands’ of pounds. Currently a Round Robin trip involving pleasure boat, steam train and buses is run, now the company will run the Kingsbridge Salcombe ferry operation.

The company is also planning to extend its season.
