EA: no messing around

INLAND WATERWAYS: The need to cut costs means the Environment Agency (EA) didn’t mess around. It’s closed its two water points and sanitary stations on the River Avon navigation, writes Harry Arnold.
To maintain services to boaters Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) has therefore been obliged to install replacement water and sanitary facilities at Strensham Lock and at Evesham Lock during April and May. ANT will also provide another station at Pershore in August.
The situation begs the question - is this the start of a general cutback in facilities by the EA because of tighter budgets? ANT is, however, responsible for navigation on the restored Upper and Lower Avon routes, with the EA controlling the rest of the river’s functions.
