Preserving the environment is an important consideration for all, but one company in the marine sector, Marlec, has given it top priority for 40 years.

Rutland-based Marlec is the UK manufacturer of micro wind turbines for sailing boats around the world. Its Rutland 1200 wind charger gives boat owners freedom of power from mains hook ups plus battery charging while sailing.

The idea of topping up batteries at off-grid locations came from demand within the rural community where power was needed for stables and electric fencing in the late 1970’s. By 1979, the inventor’s interest in sailing resulted in a wind powered solution being developed and launched for boats and today their battery charging turbines range from 500mm in diameter to 1.8m with power ratings up to 1kW.

The company has sold over 100,000 turbines globally and it is the UK’s longest standing renewable energy business, beating even BP in the number of years active in this sector.

“In the mid to late 1980’s we started to see companies, including BP, commercialising solar panels for battery charging and we secured a deal to distribute a range alongside our wind turbine offering," explained sales director, Teresa Auciello.

“We’re very proud to achieve such longevity in the renewable energy business and although this is our 40th anniversary year, Marlec has been at the forefront of its industry in both turbine design and electronic controls. A recent example is the introduction of our maximum power point tracking technology which boosts turbine energy production.”

Many long-distance cruising yacht owners embrace renewable energy as an essential component of independent and comfortable on-board living. Easily mounted, a wind turbine and solar panels quietly generate power for a wide range of devices.
