It’s all in the planning
Contrary to some expectations, Seaglaze reports that many sectors within the market place appear to be busy and MD Alistair Clayton predicts the next 18 months will bring steady growth.
Whilst there have been some builder and supplier closures in recent months, Alistair says the exterior fit-out market remains buoyant.
“We’re seeing a focus on increasing capacity by improving productivity rather than expansion - this brings its own challenges in a marketplace that’s susceptible to change,” he said. “The key here is to monitor customer demand, forecast and plan production in line with requirements, freeing up capacity to respond to last minute requests.”
For Seaglaze, one major aspect has been a dramatic increase in customers requiring rapid replacement glass at short notice.
Reacting to this type of industry challenge requires a different mindset from the ‘batch production’ ethos of many suppliers, explained Alistair.
“Such requests are typically for one-off window, door and hatch designs; as a bespoke manufacturer, we do not follow the ‘one size fits all’ approach of other providers and our customers would not expect us to do so,” he says.
“Spending more time aligning our production with customers’ projects means we can react more quickly to their demands and any changes to project specifications.”
And he added: “I believe we are unrivalled in our lead times, bespoke product development and ability to respond to those last minute ‘accidental smashed windscreen’ requests which if not sorted can prevent a vessel from being operational.”
