METS: The Deep Blue electric outboard motor from Torqeedo GmbH took the overall DAME Award at this year’s 25th Anniversary METS in Amsterdam.

According to the DAME Jury, the Deep Blue large electric outboard is an exceptional example of groundbreaking research and development and one that will bring great benefits to both the users and builders of boats.

After "substantial financial investment" Torqeedo successfully combined two established, yet distinct, technologies - a large outboard engine and an electric motor - for the first time to create a revolutionary integrated propulsion system.

The jury went on to add the motor is striking in its styling and highly notable for its innovation.

The Torqeedo outboard is on stand 11.705 at METS.

The 22nd annual Design Award METS competition attracted 115 products from 25 countries. A total of 39 products were shortlisted for final consideration as nominated products from which the jury selected the Overall DAME Winner, together with six outright category winners and 10 special mentions.

The DAME Award's jury chairman, Bill Dixon, says the calibre of entrants in this year's competition has been as strong as ever.

"The excellent quality of the 2012 DAME Design Award entry list has been clear evidence that the marine industry is continuing to invest confidently in a broad range of innovative and well designed new products, despite the difficult economic climate," said jury chairman Bill Dixon.

"As always, it was a difficult task for the DAME Jury judges to elect the eventual category and overall winners from such an impressive array of diverse and well designed marine products.

"We were, however, very pleased that all seven categories were well represented - especially in the important areas of deck equipment, rigging, safety and navigational software."

The category winners were:

Marine equipment & related software: SonarCharts by Navionics – Italy

Interior equipment, furnishings, materials and electrical fittings used in cabins: Nuance by Vision Systems – France

Deck equipment, sails, and rigging: T25 Organiser by Spinlock – United Kingdom

Clothing and crew equipment: Fibercon G2 & Elysse G2 by Chatham Marine – United Kingdom

Life saving and safety equipment: inReach by DeLorme – USA

Machinery, propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems and fittings: Deep Blue by Torqeedo GmbH – Germany

Overall DAME Winner 2011 Deep Blue by Torqeedo GmbH - Germany
