Cross-party support for waterways
Current waterways campaigns and issues have been discussed by peers and MPs from multiple parties at a parliamentary reception organised by the Inland Waterways Association (IWA).
Topics included the potential transfer of the Environment Agency’s navigations to Canal & River Trust with a sufficient funding package; the need for more affordable moorings and other issues affecting residential boaters; the need to mitigate the impact of HS2 at specific waterway locations and restoration and regeneration projects around the country.
IWA’s national chairman, Les Etheridge, said: “We were pleased that so many MPs and peers were able to…drop in to our event and we look forward to working with them in the future both nationally and locally across the country.”
MPs and peers were encouraged to join the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Waterways and develop relationships with local waterway groups in their constituencies.
