David Suchet returns to open historic narrowboat festival
After an absence of ten years, actor and waterways enthusiast, David Suchet will return to Braunston Marina to open the 16th Braunston Historic Narrowboat Rally & Canal Festival in June.
The theme of the rally will be the 60th anniversary of the launch of the Raymond – the last wooden narrowboat built for the English canals.
“The Raymond was built at what was then Barlow’s Yard – now Braunston Marina – and launched on 2nd June 1958,” explained Tim Coghlan, Braunston Marina MD.
“The boat was rescued in 1996 in a derelict state by the newly former Friends of Raymond, who then carried out a major restoration to it.”
Works have continued over the years with another restoration this winter. The boat will be in the opening parade of the rally with David at the helm.
The rally was first held in 2003 and grown over the years attracting 93 historic narrowboats in 2017.
“Its success-formula is now much copied, with similar events springing up all over the canal network,” explained Tim. “This is good for the canals and the precious collection of surviving working narrowboats.”
The festival takes place on June 23 and 24 and is sponsored by Braunston Marina and Towpath Talk magazine with support from the Canal & River Trust.
