Free CO alarms from Safelincs and TBS Boats
Mandatory installation of carbon monoxide alarms on enclosed boats in UK waterways would save lives.
That’s the message from the BoatCOSafe campaign that is highlighting the dangers - in recent years, 19 boaters have died and another 24 have needed hospital attention from carbon monoxide gases.
To help with the problem, TBS Boats is installing free Safelincs carbon monoxide alarms on every new or used boat they sell in their three locations - Penton Hook Marina in Surrey, Bray Marina in Berkshire and the Hamble.
"We didn't have a second thought about getting involved and supporting the BoatCOSafe campaign,” explained Dominic Smulders, TBS Boats Bray MD. “There are too many reports of injuries and sadly, deaths from this silent killer.”
The BoatCOSafe campaign is asking people to sign a petition – available at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/207382 - which it hopes to take to parliament asking for CO alarms to be mandatory on inland waterways.
"Boats are naturally enclosed spaces where carbon monoxide can build up very quickly – and as you can't smell or see it, you can be affected by it before you realise what has happened," said lead campaigner Niki Molnar MBE
"Alarms are so reasonably priced these days that there is no reason why every boat owner should not have a suitable CO alarm installed. Rented homes must legally have one, so why not smaller, more confined, boats?"
