Mooring demand grows
Record numbers of boaters are taking winter moorings with the Canal & River Trust.
The Trust is reporting a 15% year-on-year growth in boaters taking moorings for the season – so far 522 permits have been sold compared to 454 in 2015.
The Trust picked a range of winter mooring sites across the country to offer boaters as wide a choice as possible, also taking into account boaters’ feedback on last year’s winter mooring spots.
The approach has meant that this year winter moorings have been taken up at 104 locations.
“While the canals in winter can be extremely beautiful the conditions can turn challenging and some boaters want the assurance of a particular mooring to keep their boat,” said Mike Grimes, head of boating at Canal & River Trust.
“We’ve spent a lot of time working on what we can offer boaters and listening to what they want.”
He added: “I’m pleased the moorings have proved so popular.”
Proceeds from winter mooring sales are put back into the waterways to provide for their care, with £250,500 raised so far this year, up on last year’s £183,000.
