Just a few of last year's 65 riders, ready for the off

This year sees the 4th running of the exhibitor charity event on the Wednesday night of the PSP Southampton Boat Show - Leather & Lycra night. And we have Red Dwarf’s The Cat coming along for the ride.

CHARITY EVENT: The charity event for motorcyclists and runners – now known as Leather & Lycra night – makes its return to the PSP Southampton Boat Show this year for the fourth time.

And we have Danny John-Jules – aka Red Dwarf’s The Cat - joining the bike ride on his pink (really!) Yamaha R1. He’ll also be at the meal after the event.

As well as the motorcycle run from Herbert Walker Avenue to Christchurch and back for the leather clad, those wearing lycra have a 5-mile jog circuit around Southampton (faster runners can do two laps if they wish).

When both groups return – scheduled for 20.30ish – there will be changing and shower facilities at the Holiday Inn Fitness Lounge, after which there will be a meal in the Windward Hall lounge, followed by more fundraising and the presentation of cheques/monies to the night’s charity, Riders for Health www.riders.org

The event costs everyone taking part – riders and runners - £15 each. That covers the cost of the meal and offers a small charity donation. And it’s payable before the event because we have to give the caterers numbers.

The riders using Triumph-supplied bikes pay an extra charity donation of £25 to ride one of the machines. As this issue closed for press, all the 15 Triumph bikes had been reserved (and paid for!). But this doesn’t stop anyone who wants to bring their own bike along for the event.

The runners will set off from the show in two and threes – this isn’t a race; just a jog in company. The 5-mile loop begins at the bottom of Southampton High Street, goes over the Itchen Bridge, around Woolston to Bitterne, over the Northam Bridge and back into town past St Mary’s Football Stadium.

National Boat Shows (NBS) will be on hand - thanks to Land Rover support - at points around the route and printed copies of the route will be available before the start.

And with Garmin another major sponsor this year, we’ll have GPS on some of the Triumphs and GPS watches will be available for some of the runners. Garmin will give some training on both types of GPS before the off.

Both bike and runner groups are due to set off at 19.00 prompt. The routes are designed to get everyone back to the show to eat in the Windward Hall lounge at 21.00.

All monies raised at this event will go to the Riders for Health charity, which has organised for Danny John Jules to join us for the evening.

We’d also like to give huge thanks to the following companies: Boating Business, Cooney Marine, Nicola Charles Promotions, Trend Marine , Phoenix Marine, Trinity Marine, Blackburns Metals, Lion Insurance, Elite Furnishings and Rightons – and not forgetting the huge support from Garmin, Triumph and NBS as without them this event could not happen.
