New pontoon berth in Loch Creran

07 Apr 2010

The development of facilities at Barcaldine Marine, Loch Creran, continues with the construction of a short term berthing and landing pontoon to improve the service to yachts on long term moorings, and to visitors.

SCOTLAND: The new pontoon in Loch Creran, which will be ready in spring 2010, will be built by Fusion Marine, which is based at the Marine Resource Centre, also home of Barcaldine Marine, writes Mike Balmforth.

The hammerhead arrangement will provide temporary berthing for up to six vessels at a time in 5m of water, allowing easy loading, unloading and watering. Extensive seabed monitoring has ensured the pontoon will be moored in a way that avoids damage to the sensitive serpulid reef at the periphery of Loch Creran.

Barcaldine Marine currently has 50 deep water swinging moorings in a minimum depth of 6m. These are professionally laid and serviced and are suitable for vessels up to 11.6m in length or 15 tonnes gross weight, although larger or heavier vessels can be accommodated on request.
