Oban facilities improving

SCOTLAND: Facilities for visiting cruising yacht are steadily improving at Oban, despite the new town centre pontoons being a year away, writes Mike Balmforth.

The 16 new visitor moorings at Gallanach, near Oban Sailing Club, now boast a new landing pontoon for loading and unloading of crew and provisions, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes if others are waiting.

Oban Bay Berthing Company, which operates the facility, is owned by marine and tourism businesses in the area and its income will be used to pay for existing and future developments.

Meanwhile across the bay on the Isle of Kerrera, Oban Marina has extended its pontoon system to increase visitor berths to 30. These, and the comprehensive boatyard services available, make this a key facility on the mid west coast.

The marina runs an hourly 40 seat ferry shuttle service between the island and Oban, serving those who want to visit the town, and also mainlanders who want to visit the excellent Waypoint Bar and Grill at the marina.
