Olympic success for UK marine industry
Ribcraft will be supplying 64 boats for LOCOG
After the purchase of Rayglass RIBs made the trade wonder if any UK firms were going to get contracts for the 2012 Olympic, the BMF has published a list of successful UK firms - Ribcraft leads the way with a 64 boat order.
2012 OLYMPICS: The British Marine Federation (BMF) has released a list of UK firms that have picked up marine contracts from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Contracts for the majority of 150 support boats required for the sailing, rowing, canoeing, triathlon and open water swim events have been awarded, with a further 30 craft to be sourced by the RYA from sailing clubs across the UK, providing opportunities for the clubs and owners to get involved in the 2012 Games.
Charter contracts have been awarded to 19 commercial fishing and dive boats operating out of Portland and Weymouth and Solent Rib Charter in Lymington will supply 24 charter RIBs together with the management structure LOCOG requires.
Ribcraft of Yeovil has a contract for 64 RIBs for jury, umpire, mark laying and measurement roles. At least four of the mark laying RIBs will be donated to the RYA after the games to help support the sport and run more UK world class domestic and international sailing events.
Cowes based South Boats Special Projects will build an 11m catamaran to be used as one of five committee boats. This boat will also be donated by LOCOG to the RYA post games.
LOCOG says the Rayglass RIBs bought earlier this year were 'top-class boats that met its requirements for games use and are an example of efficient recycling and reuse of event equipment'.
Suzuki GB will supply up to 90 outboard motors to power the RIBs LOCOG is having manufactured. They will also support the rowing, canoe and swimming events with other specialist motorised craft.
‘I’m delighted that so many British and British based companies, including BMF members, have won contracts for the 2012 Olympics,’ said BMF chief executive Rob Stevens. ‘This is a great start to what promises to be a wonderful opportunity for British marine companies to maximise the benefits that the Games will bring pre, during and post, whilst also showcasing British excellence to a global audience.’
