Pompey to make £20m from Volvo Race

01 Sep 2005

Portsmouth is expecting the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) to boost its economy by £ 20 million when it starts next year, writes Iain Sutherland .

The boats will arrive in the city on May 23 and leave on June 2, with a round the Isle of Wight race on May 29.

To capitalise on the event a partnership of local authorities and business has been formed and local companies were told of the money making opportunities at the partnership launch in July.

Events planned around the VOR include a carnival, lectures and an as yet unspecified education project.

Baltimore earned £13.5 million from the VOR in 1998 and Cape Town £19.6 million in 2002.
