This year’s Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) at the Amsterdam RAI celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Design Award Mets (DAME). Seldén Mast AB is also celebrating after its reversible winch won this year’s award.

METS: The overall winner the DAME Award is the Seldén reversible winch from Seldén AB. The DAME jury, led by yacht designer Bill Dixon, felt this winch would have the largest impact on the leisure marine industry.

Reversing the winch to ease sheets, said the jury, gave greater safety for the operator. The reversing button is built into the winch handle, making the reverse a very hands-on intuitive operation. The sheet is held in both directions by a self-tailing device which sheds the line easily in reverse.

The jury presented six DAME awards in the eight categories, plus one Most Eco-Friendly Product Award and two Most Innovative Product Awards.

Two UK companies took category DAME Awards - Global Marine Tracking Systems topped the Lifesaving Category with its Jet Trak system, which monitors PWCs and enables remote disabling.

Spinlock took the DAME Award in the Marine Electronics category with its ZS Rope Sense. The device allows the crew to monitor line loads constantly and see the  actual load values on any line.

In the Interior Equipment category, the Barigo Steel Mel by Barigo Barometerfabrik GmbH took the DAME Award. In the Deck Equipment Category, the Seldén reversible Winch took the top spot.

Fischer Panda GmbH took the DAME Award in the Machinery and Propulsion category, while Navionics S.p.a. won the DAME Award in Marine Related Software.

The Most Eco-Friendly Product certificate went to Officine Meccaniche Pejrani S.r.l for its Converter NV Series, which reduces on board waster by 70%.

Two Most Innovative Product certificates were both awarded to products based on the iPad platform. One certificate went to Palladium Technologies for its Simon2 yacht control software. The other certificate went to Navionics for its Mediterranean HD chart.

Three category Special Mentions went to Garmin Europe for its GPSMap 720, to Halyard for its PureGen and to Spinlock for its XXCO812 Powerclutch.

The METS Breakfast Briefing keynote speech was handled by trendwatcher Adjiedj Bakas, who offered a very thought-provoking view of the future along the lines of ‘he who doesn’t innovate, won’t last long in this rapidly changing world’.
