Active Foil to revolutionise yacht building

UK luxury yacht builder Princess reports its latest active foil technology, developed in partnership with BAR Technologies for its R35 craft due to launch in September, will deliver unparalleled comfort and stability, signalling a ‘step change’ in naval architecture.

The patented Princess Active Foil System has never been used before; at speed, two active foils retreat from the stern of the full carbon-fibre 35ft boat and work independently, optimising performance, separating stability from drag. This, says chief executive Antony Sheriff, puts Princess at least two steps ahead of its peers.

As well as appearing on the R35 prototype, Princess intends to incorporate what it describes as ‘revolutionary’ technology into all of its craft.

During 2018, the firm is set to launch 10 new models – its V50, V65 and S78 vessels were unveiled earlier this year - and further portfolio additions include an 85ft Motor Yacht, a 78ft V model and a new Flybridge boat.

Antony concedes Princess is adopting an aggressive launch strategy, investing in research and development and new technical facilities to design boats that it says will suit peoples’ differing lifestyles.

He comments: “As superyachts become easier to manage and pilot with ever-more reliable and robust systems and communication tools, they are increasingly attractive to people who view boating as a hobby rather than a passion. They want the best of both worlds; to be able to continue with their daily activities, such as running a business, while entertaining family and friends.”

With everything in the Princess portfolio selling well and its advance order book at a 53 year high, the firm could be complacent. “But we’re not,” confirms Antony, “we want to change the concept of superyacht building, explore the innovative use of space and release a whole new class of boats that are way ahead of the market.”
