With stringent regulations in place to reduce pollution emitted by ships carrying more than 15 people, engineering installation and sales support business, Aquamare Marine reports demand for its black and grey water treatment systems is unparalleled.

“An increase in pollution issues, as evidenced in the South of France, means marinas globally are stricter on who they will allow to berth - if you can’t prove you’re treating waste water according to the latest guidelines, you won’t be allowed in,” comments director, Mike Sommerfeld.

After the update of the MEPC 227(64) section 4.2 regulations, water treatment systems are now required to treat waste water to even stricter standards before it is discharged.

Corrective action

Mike continues: “Being turned away from a marina certainly focuses the mind on the need to take corrective action and this has increased demand for our water treatment products from refit specialists and customers directly.

"During the last 12 months our order book has gone up by some 30%.”

The Plymouth-based company says it’s not only a ‘knee-jerk reaction’ to regulatory change that’s boosting business – it’s reaping the benefits of the superyacht boom in UK, European and American shipyards.

One clear sign of customers’ desire for opulence is the uptake in orders for its Siminetti Mother of Pearl mosaics.

Popular on furniture and poolside/Jacuzzi areas, the sustainably-sourced fresh and salt water pearl mosaics have a natural veining and texture, meaning no two tesserare are the same.

Last month Aquamare Marine moved into new purpose-built premises and increased its workforce from 13 to 18.

Mike explains: “We need to evolve as the industry does and more workshop and office space alongside our mooring enables us to meet extra customer demand.”
